Ricin poisoning: You need to pay attention to these symptoms

As a pressed oil, the seeds of the miracle tree castor are used as a healing and laxative. In their pure form, however, they are toxic and pose a danger to humans and animals.

Also known as the miracle tree or Christ's palm, castor has been known as an oil plant in Egypt for over 4,000 years. Its oil has been and is used as a light laxative or, for example, for hair care. Its seeds are very toxic  in untreated form. In them, ricin contains one of the most toxic proteins that exists in nature. The lethal dose is 0.25 milligrams. In this respect, the castor as a garden plant should be enjoyed with caution.

Symptoms of ricin poisoning in children

It is particularly treacherous that the seeds of the miracle tree taste very good. Children in particular are at risk if they consume the fruits and the seeds of the wolf's milk plant: even a chewed seed can have serious consequences. Symptoms may only appear after several hours or days – in the worst case, even death threatens.

Signs of poisoning may include:

  • General discomfort with pallor
  • Fever
  • Tremble
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Nausea
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Arrhythmias

In case of skin contact, redness and itching may occur. Caution should also be exercised with tropical seed necklaces. The seeds of castor are also used here. Once pierced, their venom can enter the skin through possible injuries.

Symptoms of ricin poisoning in domestic and farm animals

The miracle tree is also toxic to domestic and farm animals. You are most likely to recognise poisoning of your animal

  • excessive saliva flow
  • severe diarrhea
  • Muscle twitching

In addition to the seeds on the miracle tree, horn shavings applied for fertilization in the garden can also be dangerous for pets: these have often been treated with ricin, the toxin of castor.

You should consult a doctor or veterinarian in case of poisoning of your child as well as in case of poisoning of your animal. This is because the poison must be removed and, if necessary, symptomatic therapy must be performed.
